This year's them was "The Stepping Stones in the Divine Liturgy." The focus of Orthodox Christian worship is the Divine Liturgy, which literally means "the Work of the People." Sometimes it seems that just the Priest and the choir or chanters are doing the "Work" and the members of the congregation are watching. Everyone, young and old, is to participate, to do the "Work of the People."'
What is this "Work"? Ideally, if we worship frequently and understand the meaning of what we are doing, we are doing the "Work of the People." Like everything in life -- playing any sport, learning to play an instrument, studying dance, etc. -- doing "the Work of the People" requires learning, practice, and desire.
The teachers helped our students with this task by using the analogy of "Stepping Stones." Many of us have "Stepping Stones" in our gardens to keep our feet dry when the garden is muddy and to provide a path to show us "the way." The Divine Liturgy is a series of "Steps" that lead us to Christ.
